This is an idea that I covered a while back in a couple of posts titled Accenting the Ride Part 1 and Part 2. I worked on this idea today with a bit of a twist, each group of eighth notes utilizes a simple orchestration: hi-hat on the beat, snare drum on the off beat. To get started with this idea play through Lesson 4 from Ted Reed’s Syncopation, feather the bass drum throughout (I left this out of the pdf for clarity’s sake.)
Once you can play everything comfortably try trading 4s with yourself; four bars of time and four bars of improvised phrases using the ideas from Lesson 4.
